It is common to incur an injury to bone separate from a break or fracture. Bones can become bruised from either a direct injury or from over use. Symptoms usually include a deep ache and tenderness at the affected bone.
Diagnosis begins with a thorough examination including x-ray; however, often an MRI or CT scan may be necessary to actually visualize what is termed a marrow stress reaction in the affected bone.
Treatment usually involves partial immobilization in a removable walking boot with limited activities followed by physical therapy. With proper diagnosis and treatment a complete cure is probable.
